Joss Whedon chats with EW's Jeff Jensen about his new ''Vampire Slayer'' comic -- and shows off a few panels.
We miss Buffy the Vampire Slayer. We really do. The kicks. The quips. And Willow. Wonderful, wonderful Willow. Sigh. Salvaged from the floppy ruin of a 1992 campy horror flick starring Kristy Swanson and Luke Perry, Joss Whedon's long-running television series starring Sarah Michelle Gellar was doing the Lost thing before Lost was even a glimmer in JJ Abrams' eye — epic, mythic, character-driven serialized storytelling, told with humor and heart. And save for that love it/hate it sixth season, the show never failed to deliver the goods. Today's serialized glamour shows now struggling to remain creatively vital could learn a thing or two from Buffy.
Joss Whedon misses his famous creation, too. Which is why he's returning to it three years after the show's final episode with a new comic book series, slated to debut in March, that continues Buffy's adventures. Whedon, 42, is running the comic as if it were a TV show; after writing the first four issues (a premise-establishing pilot), he'll oversee other scribes who will write the remaining issues (think: episodes) in what is planned to be 25-to-30-issue saga. ''We're calling it season 8,'' says Whedon, ''and we're picking up almost right after season seven left off. I don't know exactly why it or how it happened. I just thought, 'Oh, I could do that! It would be fun!' It happens to me every now and then, and causes me to commit to things I really don't have time for.''

NA,
Jane Espenson, Drew Goddard, Drew Greenberg, Steven DeKnight and Doug Petrie are all locked in to the project to write some issues.
You would think with all these Buffy alumni writers that they could put a movie together or sumthin.....sigh....I guess I'll take what I can get though. chuckles at NA's admission of never reading a comic

Us folks with Gruffness don't do comic books i guess hehehehe
But a movie would be nice, but we need a dru, cordy and anya as well.
Don't think that comes out well on just print..i think.
Maybe sometime coming year they'll decide to go for it. Maybe if a network's interested the rest will come too

Yea, I was a huge Dru fan. She was one crazy beaaatoch with a bite. In fact I can't think of a single character I didn't like. Some annoyed me at times, like Dawn....but I got over the get out, get out, get out, whine and in the end got to like her better.

I see it's an older thread, but I do have some insight pertaining to its subject matter.
I've ben picking up the Buffy comics since its release. I have all but issue 3. I got to say, Joss has not lost his touch.
Now I would agree that seeing the Scoobies in a film format, i.e. television or movie, is preferable. I suppose it's because that's what most Buffy fans are used to, but I mostly due to the fact that TV was the original format (that is if you choose to ignore the campy movie with that guy that used to have a Saturday morning TV show ).
But it's been a while since I read a comic book, and seeing that Buffy and crew is still kicking demon-ass and taking names (that mortals probably shouldn't even read) gives me a reason to visit the comics section at the bookstores at least once a month. I do hope that Joss, Jane, Drew, Drew, etc. keep this as an ongoing title.
Along those lines, I hear that Joss and company are working on a new series based on Serenity. I think it's a mini-series, probably three or four issues, that's set sometime just before the movie, probably during the TV show. So for those interested, that's supposed to be out this winter. And, as of late, Joss has been writing for Marvel. I'm not certain, but off the top of my head, I think he's written for a few of the Spider-Man and X-Men titles.
